Hey Reader, The most difficult aspect of pain recovery that is rarely talked about is our relationship to pain. What does pain mean to you? How do you view your pain? How have you learnt to deal with pain? What is the pain stopping you from doing? It's important to ask these questions to understand our pain at a deeper level. Understanding the true cost of our suffering and distress. Pain is not something that is outside of us. It is not a stranger. It is a part of us, a constant companion. If we were to approach our pain like a stranger we might ignore it or push it away. But that only creates more tension in the relationship. The only way to free ourselves from the burden is to move through pain. With the qualities of compassion, understanding, kindness, and love. Let's try and understand the role of pain in our lives. Let's approach pain with care and love. I'm sure that all sounds good and well but how the hell do we get to the point of embracing our pain?!! The work of embracing our pain is incredibly difficult. It's going to be fraught with ups and downs. But the most important factor to success is consistency. We need to be consistently showing our pain kindness rather than anger and frustration. This may mean first acknowledging our pain and then implementing a flare up plan every time we get a spike in pain levels. It may also mean regulating our nervous system and emotions as soon as we feel distress due to pain. The work I do as a pain coach is exactly this. Teaching people to shift their mindset, embrace their pain, and practice, practice, practice. Practice is the key towards pain relief and freedom. Consistency over progress.
